At the end of Paul’s first letter to the Church at Corinth, he tells them to watch, to stand fast in the faith, to grow up and be a man, and to be strong. (1 Corinthians 16:13)

When Paul uses the phrase “Watch ye” he is using a military metaphor that describes a sentry on duty. Now if you are a sentry, you have one job; you are on the lookout for danger. It is up to you to sound the alarm if you see something out of place.

It is the same way in our spiritual lives, “We need to be on guard.” Every time something happens, or something is out of place, we need to ask “Why.” What is behind this? Where is this coming from? Why is this happening, and at this time?

If we will always be alert spiritually; if we will always be on our guard and look at things in the light of the Word and eternity; if we will always be alert, living with the understanding that we are in a battle; we can catch those things that satan will use to distract us, or cause us to fall away from the Lord.

Always be on your guard!
